Things to See & Do

Skiing

Aviemore is Scotland’s premier ski resort located near Cairngorm Mountain.

Skiers will know all about Cairngorm Mountain where some great skiing is to be found – when we’re lucky enough to get lots of snow.  Non skiers can take a return trip up the funicular railway to the Ptarmigan visitor centre at 3,600 feet where you’ll find the highest shop and restaurant in the UK as well as a visitor experience exhibition.

In the summer months (July to September), the restaurant offers “sunset” dining on Friday and Saturday evenings.  Book early for this since it is hugely popular.

Details of the Cairngorm Mountain Ski Centre can be found at www.cairngormmountain.org.

Walks & Cycle Routes

Cyclists and walkers will love the Spey Valley area.  Close to our house is the start of an off-road cycle path (part of National Route number 7) and walkway which goes across the heather moorland to Boat of Garten – about 5 miles.

Wonderful scenery and not too difficult – ideal for a family mountain biking day ride.  There are lots of other walks and off-road cycling opportunities nearby – from the easy walks and trails around Loch Morlich to very challenging walks and rides in the surrounding mountains.

Watersports

Loch Morlich and other Lochs in the area have watersports activities. Or if you prefer to get wet indoors, there is a large leisure pool in the Macdonald Aviemore Highland Resort (in Aviemore Centre) and at the Hilton Coylumbridge (about 2 miles outside Aviemore), both of which you can pay to use.

Golf

Right on our doorstep, voted one of the best golf courses in Scotland, The Spey Valley Championship Golf Course at the Macdonald Resort is only 10-15 minutes walk away.

  • 18 Hole, par 72 Championship Course
  • Featuring Scotland’s Longest Hole (635 yards)
  • Golf Buggies & Professional Tuition available
  • Stunning Views of the Scottish Highlands

If you’re a golf enthusiast, there are several other courses within 30 minutes drive, including the challenging Boat of Garten.  A multi-course pass is available to purchase locally.
